Armed violence imposes a tremendous human and economic burden on individuals, families and communities. More than 740,000 people die each year as a result of violence associated with armed conflict and large and small-scale criminality. The majority of these deaths - as many as 490,000 occur outside war zones.
The Geneva Declaration recognizes the need for a comprehensive approach to measure the overall impact of armed violence worldwide that includes indicators beyond intentional mortality and morbidity rates. This interactive map illustrates the scope and distribution of armed violence.
